Pingo is Ping’s signature character. He is a friendly honey badger who reflects the brand’s personality: he moves fast, helps confidently in important moments, and makes Ping easier to understand.
Pingo has defined visual traits, a color palette, personality, emotions, and usage rules. They are all collected in the character passport so he stays recognizable on the website, in the app, in animations, and in print materials.
Why Ping needs its own character
An interface helps people use the app, but a brand’s personality is shaped by more than buttons and screens. We needed a character who could speak to users more clearly and vividly: introduce new features, guide onboarding, draw attention to important settings, and accompany people inside the service.
That’s how Pingo came to be. He does not replace the interface or distract from it. His role is to make Ping feel more human, recognizable, and consistent.
Pingo can appear:
- on sign-up and sign-in screens;
- in hints and tutorials;
- in privacy and security materials;
- in official Ping news;
- in stickers, reactions, and animations;
- in advertising and brand materials.
Pingo moves fast
Ping is built for communication without unnecessary friction, so speed became one of Pingo’s core traits. In illustrations, this is shown through dynamic poses, forward motion, signal lines, and messages already on their way to the recipient.
It’s a visual expression of energy and readiness to act without delay. Even in a still frame, Pingo looks like he already knows the next step and is ready to take it.
Pingo protects communication
Reliability is another important part of his character. In privacy and security materials, Pingo acts as a calm and confident guide. He highlights important actions and helps users understand the next step.
The shield next to Pingo symbolizes a protected space for communication, while the checkmark represents a completed action. The character should create a sense of stability: he is there, understands the situation, and helps people act with confidence.
Pingo speaks to users in a friendly way
Communication should never feel cold or mechanical. Pingo is open, friendly, and able to explain complex things in simple words. He can greet a new user, point them to the right setting, support them after an error, or introduce a new feature.
He does not talk down to people or overload them with technical language. His tone is calm, clear, and respectful. Even when the message is an error or a warning, the character should help rather than scare.
What Pingo should look like
The character’s appearance is built on Ping’s visual system. Pingo has essential traits that keep him recognizable in any format:
- a white stripe down the center of his head;
- a white muzzle and chest;
- a dark blue mask around the eyes;
- bright blue eyes;
- blue fur in several shades;
- orange dynamic accents;
- a compact athletic build;
- rounded ears and an expressive tail;
- a friendly, confident expression.
These details should not be changed arbitrarily from one image to another. In brand materials, Pingo can be 3D, flat, animated, or rendered in three dimensions, but his core proportions, muzzle pattern, and color areas must stay the same.
Pingo has his own emotions
Pingo is not limited to a single default smile. He can be friendly, cheerful, surprised, serious, determined, thoughtful, embarrassed, sad, or displeased, depending on the situation.
Even negative emotions should keep the character recognizable. A determined or displeased Pingo does not turn into a cruel or scary character. His expressions help respond to a successful action, a new message, a connection error, or an important warning while keeping the same personality.
Character passport
To keep Pingo’s image consistent when creating new illustrations, a separate character passport was prepared for him. It records the canonical appearance, key angles and poses, the emotion set, brand colors, proportions, head, body, and tail features, as well as examples of unacceptable distortions.
The passport is not only for artists. It helps designers, developers, marketers, and contractors use the character consistently across all materials. Thanks to it, Pingo remains recognizable in the app, on the website, on social media, on clothing, and in future 3D or animated versions.
